The term is related to the reign of Queen Victoria of England from 1837 to 1901. Since it covers a wide time span, the era has been divided into the early-Victorian period (1837-1851), the mid-Victorian period (1851-1875) and the late-Victorian period (1875-1901). ´´Victorian´´ is also used today to describe British furniture and architecture made during the greater part of the 19th century. Additionally it refers to British literary works which were written, for instance by Wilkie Collins or Charles Dickens. Furthermore specific social and moral attitudes are associated with the word ´´Victorian.´´ The Victorian age was an age of transition. England was transformed from a feudal and agricultural society into an industrial democracy. Nevertheless the process of the industrial revolution did not only create progress but also problems. One drawback was the hierarchy which was created in the British society leading to a division of people into distinctive social classes. In order to analyze the class distinctions more precisely this term paper concentrates on the specific class divisions that arose especially between the middle class and the working class and on how these differences were characterized. In addition, the three well known Victorian values of the middle and working class, family life, respectability and self-help, are defined and discussed. Due to the fact that it is not possible to discuss the whole Victorian period as one homogenous era, the discussion of the social classes and their values is restricted to the mid-Victorian period. He is well known in nearly all European countries and even in the United States. But how did he become that famous or maybe even a label for today´s view on English humour? In my research paper I want to point out Cleese´s significance for British Comedy and humour. At first, I would like to give a general definition of the term and at the same time look at different types of humour in order to investigate why people start grinning or laughing in certain situations. I will present some criteria which can detect different types of humour and consider humour on phonological and syntactical levels. Then I want to work out if there is a special concept of humour in the United Kingdom and if this humour even characterises the British culture. In a next step I will compare the stereotypical concept of British and German humour to show that they are at least rated as being contradictory. After I have shown some typical styles and techniques of the British humour, my central focus will be on John Cleese. I want to give an overview of his life and introduce people who are close to him or supported him in his career. In doing so I will also concentrate on his major achievements: e.g. Monty Python´s Flying Circus and their films and Fawlty Towers. Their popularity throughout the world is really remarkable and shows that Cleese and his friends possibly managed to broadcast a new sense of humour. I will therefore finally analyse their and particular Cleese´s share in British sense of humour.

It studies questions of global and local living and highlights living circumstances shaped by patterns of migration and mobility. Christine Hunner-Kreisel is Juniorprofessor (Transculturality and Gender) at the University of Vechta. Her area of expertise is research on childhood and youth. Her research topics are growing up in migrant societies, as well as migration and mobility processes in Germany and Azerbaijan. She researches on the subject of well-being of children and youth with reference to questions of gender, religion and educational processes. She has expertise in qualitative research methods. Dr. Sabine Bohne is currently coordinator of the EU-Project Gender Equality in Research and the Academia (EGERA) at University of Vechta. Her main research topics are gender, gender based violence, equal opportunities and human rights (violations). In November 2015 she will also starts the coordination of Refugees @ UOS at University of Osnabrück, Germany.
